2.       Thanks to Cumberland Heights for hosting this Holiday meeting.  The food  and accommodations were great.

3.       Discussed need to find a new location for the meetings due to changes at Centerstone.  Ideally we want one location and not to move around, but it needs to be central and with parking.

4.       Due to lack of quorum, the 2011-12 Officer election was postponed until the February meeting.

5.       Susan suggested attempts to get involvement and feedback from members. A survey was considered to contact to those listed as a Provider but don't attend meetings.  Susan Gillpatrick was willing to be nominated for Membership, since she maintains the web list of members in her role as Web Mistress.  If the secretary completes the minutes and forwards to the Web Mistress, she could keep an updated master list and send out all announcements.  That would make it a step easier for whoever takes notes/minutes.  Whoever does this should use a template.  An agenda for each meeting would also be useful.

6.       There was discussion on making/keeping  the Chapter vibrant and relevant so that members will remain active.  All ideas on this are welcomed.

WELLNESS 66 : Facing Pain; Finding Hope

Instructors: Dr Michael Murphy, Dr Catherine Stallworth, and Dr Earl Lavender.

Wellness 66 is a collaborative effort formed from a vision to offer our community educational information regarding the affects of aging upon the body, mind, and spirit. This endeavor has brought together three entities concerned with the senior population: Parthenon Pavilion at Centennial, The Center for Healthy Living at Centennial Medical Center, and The Resource Center on Aging at Harpeth Hills Church of Christ. Our focus for this experiential workshop is coping with life-stress issues. Presenters will specifically explore the personal, social, and spiritual domains of this vast subject. Among our speakers will be a physician, a psychotherapist, and a recording artist. You will have the opportunity to attend breakout sessions in yoga, therapeutic gardening, art and music therapy, massage, prayer, gratitude, and much more. Make sure you dress accordingly! This is a complementary educational offering and lunch will be provided. We have applied for approval from NAB for 5 CEUs for long-term care administrators and will provide information for those of other disciplines seeking continuing education. Each participant will receive a certificate of attendance and an informational workbook to take home. Registration will begin at 8:15 AM. The program will start promptly at 8:45 AM and will be complete by 3:45 PM at which time you will be able to pick up your certificate of attendance. Plan to arrive a little early if you have vision, hearing, or other physical issues. This will allow you to choose a seat that best suits your needs. Early bird registration will be at 06:45 followed by a pre-workshop experience. There will be a post-workshop experience at 4:00. CEUs are available for both of these.

8.       Jack Freckman LCSW,CEAP presented “ EAP in Tennessee (ALMACA and MTEAPA)

a.       The Middle TN Chapter began in the 70’s.

b.       John Malloy was an early driving force for ALMACA.

c.       In 1983 EASN formed in Detroit (primarily Canadian), and offered a lifetime membership for $200 for the first 90 days. 60-70% of the membership joined under those terms. This proved to be a very poor business decision future limiting cash flow.

d.       Jack Freckman moved to Nashville in 1986 (little known factoid)

e.       Middle TN EAPA has always met on Thursdays. (another little known fact)

f.         Nashville hosted two Southern Regional EAP Conferences: 1988 - “The B-EAP Goes On”  and 1992; and the best International EAPA Conference happened in Nashville in 2006.

g.       In early 1990s ALMACA morphed into EAPA.

h.       Membership in EAPA has varied from a high of 7500 to about 2500-3000 (current).

i.         In 1993, Tennessee was the first state to pass the LEAP, licensed under the Board of Labo after nearly a decade of preliminary work on it. .

j.         In 1995, North Carolina was the second state to offer licensure.

k.       In 2000 Labor succeeded from EAPA.

l.         In 2009, the LEAP Board was sunsetted.

m.     We are thankful to the many pioneers locally who preceded us in the field:  John Malloy, Frank Burger, Mary Ann Quirk, Ann Doak, Carol Boone, Carol Syperski, Billy Shumate, Jack Freckman, Peggy Reynolds, Billy Sellars, Charlie Schoenbrobt, Andy Isakoff, and Dave Grady (to name a few).

9.       The  NEXT MEETING:  June 17, 2010: HR and EAP presented by John Allen SHRM, LCSW.

Hugh Nash,  Cumberland Heights

Harriett Stewart, Williamson Medical Center EAP and Private Practice

Robert Albury, Cumberland Heights

Debbie Carroll, MusiCares

Jack Freckman, Freckman and Associates

Dan Hoyle, Pathfinders

Jim Kendall, Work/Life Connections-EAP at Vanderbilt,

REGRETS: Susan Gillpatrick and  Stephanie Dean

GUESTS: Jim Moore, Host and Exec Director, Cumberland Heights

1.       The meeting was called to order by John Edwards, Chair.

2.       Thanks to Cumberland Heights for hosting the annual Holiday meeting.  The food and accommodations were great.

3.       Please check out brand new look of the MTEAPA website.  GREAT job, Susan Gillpatrick, Web Mistress Extraordinaire   http://www.mteapa.org/index.html

4.       We remember Mary Ann Quirk and her many contributions to the chapter.

5.       Jack Freckman reported what is known about the LEAP. Tennessee was the first in the US to license professional EAPs.  The Board was “sunsetted”  without their prior knowledge.  The law is believed to still be active, only the Board was dissolved. There are some thoughts about aligning under a different body (not the Board of Labor).  Currently there is not a “controlling body” over the actions of EAPs.

6.       The EAPA World Conference in Dallas has only 780 attendees.  This is down sharply from previous years.

7.       PROGRAM:  Networking: Utilization of EAP Peers as Support.  There was a passionate discussion about the origins of the MTEAPA Chapter and its role in mentoring and developing those present.   Having such a network has served to keep the profession connected whereas the West Tennessee Chapter has dissolved after Andy’s death.  Since ALMACA, new models of EAP have developed.  This has made it harder to define to the business community, exactly what EAPs are and what they do.

The importance of having supervision, consultation, and mentors is often stressed as a way to improve quality and provide professional support for the practitioner. Membership in networking professional groups like the Middle Tennessee Chapter of EAP is important to the EA professional to enhance resource knowledge and networks.

Learning Objectives:

a.       Identify how networking can enhance outcomes.

b.       Discuss ways that networking can increase support for the EAP professional.

c.       Encourage the use of the collective expertise of the Middle Tennessee Chapter of EAPA.

8.       Topic: “Scream Free Parenting” – presented by Gilbert Roth, PhD based on Hal Edward Runkel, LMFT’s book of the same name. http://www.screamfree.com/

·         Parenting is about parents, not about kids.

·         “Calming the world- one persona at a time.

·         When you loose your temper, you loose credibility

·         Goals is to give choices- If the child chooses the harder option, they learn from it and deal with the consequences.

·         I take care of me for your sake

·         The things that have to last need the highest priority.

·         Consequences can b-e positive or negative.

·         “Lifesavers”- no chewing- no biting  takes about 4- minutes- rather than counting to 10.

9.       Next Topics for meetings:

d.       Our local Chapter members have been effected by the decision made by St. Thomas, Middle Tennessee Medical Center and Baptist Hospitals to outsource EAP services from an Internal one to the national Ceridian EAP. Our colleagues, John, Lawrence and Pat were significantly impacted by this decision.

5.        EAP: Thriving and Surviving in Changing Times A facilitated discussion concerning the changes we have seen in the EAP field over the years, how the profession has developed and adapted, expected directions, how to keep the profession relevant, and what we need from our national EAPA organization to help us thrive.

    1. How EAP work changed during your career has and what kinds of clients/functions did you do when you began in the field compared to what you do now?

                                                               i.      Morphed from substance abuse include mental health, risk assessment, CISM, organizational development, etc

    1. What kinds of outcomes are organizations interested in today compared to years past?

                                                               i.      Utilization used to be the only metric

ii.      Now we need to show how we add value to the company

iii.      How can we improve Presenteesim? Absenteeism? Productivity?

iv.      How do we know we are being effective beyond client satisfaction

                                                             v.      EAPA might be helpful in suggesting standards for outcome tools/measures to help the profession

    1. What are the greatest obstacles for EAP as a profession?

                                                               i.      Being viewed as valued and relevant to an employer

ii.      We are not the mental health benefit

iii.      Internal EAPs are being outsourced to national companies who provide as different product

    1. How can the national EAPA organization support us better?

                                                               i.      National EAPA needs to work on becoming customer friendly- we are their customers.

ii.      EPA training offerings need to have a designation of  Basic or Advanced.  Many in the field are seasoned and would appreciate trainings that are geared for the experience professional in order to be more valuable.

    1. What will EAP look like in ten years? How can we continue to be a viable profession?

                                                               i.      Our goal is to not become obsolete.

ii.      We must educate and market. What we do is valuable to an employer and its employees.
