Position Description:

This is a grant-funded, Non-Civil service position located within the Metro Nashville Police Department and is responsible for providing counseling to victims of crime and/or their families during and following crisis situations. This position also advises police officers on the best way to handle victims and other emotionally stressed individuals.

Employees in this position work under stressful conditions when counseling employees or victims of violent crimes of families affected by a crisis. Employees may be required to work rotating schedules and be on 24 hour call.

Major Job Responsibilities:

  • Provides counseling assistance to victims of violent crimes
  • Counsels victims and/or their families following crisis
  • Refers individuals or families with extreme problems to appropriate agencies
  • Develops treatment plans with behavioral and situational objectives
  • Conducts follow-up counseling on a weekly or bi-weekly basis as indicated by the victim's needs
  • Instructs police trainees and officers as to techniques involved in crisis counseling, victimization, and handling of emotionally distressed individuals
  • Serves as an advocate for victims through police and court proceedings
  • Acts as a liaison between the police department and local mental health agencies and hospitals
  • Maintains confidential records and writes detailed reports
  • Keeps abreast of current techniques and procedures used in handling crisis situations

 

Education and Experience:

Master's Degree in a field of Behavioral Science, such as Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, or a related field from an accredited college or university and two (2) years of clinical counseling experience in a mental health related setting.  If incumbent does not have a license at the Master’s level from the State of TN, in a counseling related field, they must receive a temporary license from the state within 90 days of appointment  No Substitution.

Valid “Class D” Driver's License.

Preferred Knowledge, Experience, Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience counseling and knowledge of the principles and techniques in counseling
  • Experience developing treatment plans with behavioral and situational objectives
  • Fluent in the Spanish language
  • Public speaking experience
